Library Assistant - 35 hours per week

Maplewood Memorial Library seeks a friendly, service oriented person as a full time Library Assistant. Under the leadership of the Supervisory Library Assistant, the Library Assistant provides direct patron assistance and performs other circulation related duties. The Library Assistant must demonstrate excellent customer service skills and be computer literate, organized, and detail oriented with an appreciation for public service and the knowledge to explain library policies.

DUTIES:

Circulation Desk: Check in, check out and renew library materials. Register patrons. Settle fees using cash register and ipad. Answer telephones and emails. Answer general questions about library collections and services. Shelve, shelf-read, move heavy carts of books.

Patron holds and requests: Receive, retrieve, activate, and pack patron holds for Maplewood Library patrons and library consortium partners.

Acquisitions and Accounts Payable: Receive new materials, check shipments for quantity and quality, match slips with purchase order, verify payment authorization, assign budgetary account, perform bookkeeping duties and clerical duties as required.

Miscellaneous: Make photocopies, maintain supplies, sort mail, empty book drop.
Other tasks may be assigned to this position as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma

  • Strong customer service & interpersonal skills

  • Good communication & organizational skills

  • Strong computer skills

  • Ability to work independently & in a team

  • Ability to regularly bend, lift, push and pull up to 25 lbs of books and other materials

Scheduling: Mon-Fri 9-5 or 10-6, one evening per week and one Saturday per month. Rotation with Children’s Room and Hilton Branch circulation desks as needed on a regular basis.

Salary range 2024
$36,355.56 - $37,901.04 Benefits include health, dental and pension

Hourly Substitute Library Assistant

Maplewood Memorial Library seeks a friendly, service-oriented person as an hourly substitute Library Assistant. The Library Assistant provides direct patron assistance and performs other circulation related duties. They have excellent customer service skills, are computer literate, organized and efficient, and enjoy working in a public-service setting. Prior knowledge of the BCCLS catalog and LEAP is a plus. This is an hourly position, offering shifts on an as-needed basis, including evenings and Saturdays.

DUTIES:

Circulation Desk: Check in, check out and renew library materials. Register patrons. Settle fees using the cash register. Answer telephones and emails. Answer general questions about library collections and services. Perform basic computer troubleshooting. Shelve, shelf-read, move heavy carts of books. Retrieve and check in items from the book drop using carts.

Patron holds and requests: Receive, retrieve, activate, and pack patron holds for Maplewood Library patrons and library consortium partners.

Other tasks may be assigned to this position as needed.

Scheduling: As needed, including evenings and Saturdays.

Salary: $18.00 per hour (2024) / $18.59 per hour (2025)
